Our Evaluation
Olive oil's biggest problems — fraud, blending, and staleness — all come from a long, anonymous supply chain. Bona Furtuna removes the chain entirely. Every bottle is grown, cold-pressed, and bottled on one 350-hectare estate, La Furtuna, in the Sicani Mountains above Corleone, Sicily. The early-harvest bottling is pressed from the estate's greenest, most pungent olives — heirloom Sicilian varieties from trees that in some cases are more than a thousand years old.
The freshness discipline is the whole story. Olives are cold-pressed within 24 hours of harvest, keeping free acidity at just 0.12–0.16% — lower than almost anything on the shelf and far under the 0.8% extra-virgin ceiling. The farm is certified organic and non-GMO, worked regeneratively without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, and the oil ships in dark glass that shields it from the light that degrades olive oil.
Where Bona Furtuna trades off is raw polyphenol count. At a lab-tested 250–400 mg/kg it is a genuinely high-polyphenol oil, but not in the 1,000+ ultra-high tier of the early-harvest Greek oils in this collection. It is the heritage-and-purity pick — ancient trees, single estate, the lowest acidity of the group — rather than the maximum-potency one. Like nearly every estate oil, it publishes no independent heavy-metal panel.
