The Bonham Standard

Our Evaluation

When a sheet is dyed, the honest question shifts from “is there chemistry?” to “how thoroughly is that chemistry vetted?” In the dyed percale lane, verification depth becomes the deciding factor — and no bedding brand we evaluated carries a deeper stack than Avocado.

Four independent audits cover this sheet from different angles. GOTS, certified by Control Union under license CU863637, verifies the organic non-GMO cotton and restricts the dye inputs throughout an audited chain. MADE SAFE screens the product's chemistry of record against a database of more than 6,500 known and suspected harmful substances, including the dyes themselves. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 then laboratory-tests the finished, dyed fabric — the cloth as it actually reaches your bed — against limits for hundreds of substances. And B Corporation certification audits the company itself. Each covers ground the others don't.

The OEKO-TEX layer is the one that matters most in this lane. Process certifications tell you what was supposed to happen during production; finished-fabric testing tells you what's actually in the cloth at the end. For a dyed product, that distinction is everything — and it's the differentiator that put Avocado ahead of every other dyed percale we evaluated, including some we admire.

Two more things worth saying plainly. Avocado publishes its supply-chain partners by name — the cotton is traceable to its source in India, a level of openness most brands never attempt, and we disclose the India origin just as plainly. And the sheets' wrinkle resistance is the natural behavior of the weave, not a resin finish — a meaningful distinction, since “wrinkle-free” in conventional bedding usually signals formaldehyde-based chemistry that GOTS prohibits here.

GOTS — Global Organic Textile Standard (Control Union, CU863637)

  • Certifies organic, non-GMO cotton with named-farm traceability
  • Restricts dye chemistry to approved low-impact inputs through an audited chain
  • Prohibits chlorine bleach, formaldehyde resins, toxic azo dyes, and PFAS

MADE SAFE

  • Screens the product's inputs — including dyes — against 6,500+ known and suspected harmful substances

OEKO-TEX Standard 100

  • Laboratory tests the finished, dyed fabric against limits for hundreds of harmful substances
  • The finished-fabric testing layer that distinguishes this pick in the dyed lane

Transparency Note

This is a dyed product. The dyes are GOTS-restricted, MADE SAFE-screened, and the finished fabric is OEKO-TEX lab-tested — but they are not natural or plant-based dyes, and we describe them accurately. The cotton is grown in India, disclosed plainly. The OEKO-TEX testing occurs within a certification program; it is not a public batch-level certificate of analysis, and no report from the independent consumer labs we cite elsewhere exists for this product.

How It Measures Up

Purity Profile

Naturalness & Purity 3/5

Organic, non-GMO cotton with genuine farm-level traceability — but this is a dyed sheet, and dyeing is an added processing step that moves fabric away from its natural state. We score that the same way here as on every dyed product, no matter how well-vetted the chemistry.

Ingredients & Additives 4/5

The dye inputs are triple-vetted: restricted by GOTS, screened by MADE SAFE, and present in fabric that passes OEKO-TEX lab limits. No bleach, no formaldehyde resins, no PFAS. Only the existence of dye chemistry at all separates this from a perfect score.

Packaging 4/5

Plastic-free packaging — a genuine positive under our standard, where plastic contact is a meaningful negative regardless of recyclability claims. We re-verify on every order, but the brand's packaging practice is documented and consistent.

Verification 5/5

Four independent audits — GOTS, MADE SAFE, OEKO-TEX, B Corp — each covering a different dimension: farming, input chemistry, finished-fabric testing, and corporate accountability. The deepest verification stack in bedding, and the reason this sheet won its lane.

Transparency 5/5

Supply-chain partners published by name, certifications publicly scoped with license numbers, origin disclosed. This is what we ask every brand to do, and very few comply this completely.

Plain English, Always

Contaminant Status

Fiber Source — Pesticides & GMO

Organic, non-GMO cotton grown in India, GOTS-audited under Control Union license CU863637, with supply-chain partners published by name.

Bleaching & Whitening

Chlorine bleach is prohibited under GOTS processing rules throughout the chain.

Dye Chemistry

GOTS-restricted dyes, additionally screened by MADE SAFE and present in finished fabric that passes OEKO-TEX laboratory limits. Not natural or plant dyes.

Chemical Finishes

No formaldehyde resins or PFAS — prohibited by GOTS and tested under OEKO-TEX. The wrinkle resistance is the weave's natural behavior, not a chemical finish.

Heavy Metals

Not independently tested outside the OEKO-TEX certification's scope. No standalone laboratory report exists.

Synthetics & Microplastics

100% cotton fiber, and the packaging is plastic-free — no synthetic contact in the product or the box.

Organic Percale Sheets

Four independent audits — GOTS, MADE SAFE, OEKO-TEX, B Corp — make this the most thoroughly verified dyed sheet in bedding, with the finished fabric itself lab-tested.
