The fabric is 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, unbleached, washed with water only — no caustic soda, no detergents — and treated with nothing but bio-enzymes. No silicone softeners, no synthetic finishing of any kind. From seed to sheet, the synthetic chemistry that defines modern textile production simply isn't there. The dye, in other words, isn't a compromise this product tolerates — it's the reason the product exists.

The company's origin explains the obsession. Aizome was founded after the founder's mother, undergoing cancer treatment, developed skin so sensitive that her own bedding became a source of irritation. The search for fabric that couldn't irritate led to the centuries-old Japanese tradition of indigo dyeing — aizome — and from there to a method for plant-dyeing modern bedding at scale. We weight purpose-built companies like this heavily: when eliminating a contaminant is the founding mission rather than a marketing position, the details tend to hold up.

Honest notes, as always. Aizome states it holds testing proving the absence of synthetic substances; we are confirming whether that testing is independent and publishable, and how the plant dyes are fixed to the fiber — traditional plant dyeing sometimes uses metallic mordants, and the company's zero-synthetic position suggests a cleaner method, but we want the answer on record. The company also references an FDA medical-device status; we could not independently confirm whether the product holds a 510(k) clearance or only an establishment registration and listing — two very different things — so we make no claim either way until it is verified, and we note that an FDA listing is not an FDA approval or endorsement of any health benefit. And the company's antibacterial and skin claims come from its own commissioned work under controlled conditions, so we note them without leading with them.
