Our Evaluation
For readers who want linen with color, the question becomes: whose dye chemistry do you trust? Most dyed linen — including beautiful, expensive linen — is conventionally grown and dyed with unspecified chemistry. Our requirement was that the organic-fiber standard stay fully intact and the dye inputs be certified, not just described with a pleasant adjective.
Coyuchi's relaxed linen is the only dyed linen we found that holds that line. The flax is GOTS-certified organic, grown in France as part of a seven-year crop rotation — flax appears in a field roughly once every seven years, with food crops in between, a practice that protects the soil and the farming communities around it. Because flax has no commercial GMO variety anywhere in the world, the non-GMO question is settled by botany before the certificate even enters the picture.
The dyes deserve a precise description, and we'll give one: they are GOTS-approved low-impact dyes. Because the entire chain is GOTS-audited, the dye chemistry is restricted to inputs that pass the standard's toxicology requirements — certified chemistry, not a marketing phrase. They are not natural or plant-based dyes, and we won't call them that. One open question we're pursuing directly with Coyuchi: the chambray weaves in this line pair dyed yarns with white yarns, and the brand doesn't publish how that white is achieved. GOTS prohibits chlorine bleach but permits gentler whitening methods.
