Coyuchi's undyed percale won the Gold Label because it satisfies both halves of our standard at once: closeness to natural form, and independent verification. Plenty of sheets manage one. Almost none manage both. We'll also say plainly what's missing — no independent laboratory has published a contaminant report on this specific product, so the purity case rests on process audits rather than finished-fabric lab data. We consider that the strongest verification available in this category today, and we tell you exactly where its edges are.
Who They Are
Coyuchi has been making organic home textiles for more than three decades — long before organic cotton was a marketing category, when sourcing it meant building direct relationships with the few farmers growing it. The company's fiber for this line comes from West Texas, one of the only meaningful organic cotton regions in the United States, and is woven in Portugal by mills operating inside the same audited chain.
What distinguishes Coyuchi in a crowded “natural bedding” market is restraint. The undyed collection exists because the company decided the cotton's own color — a soft, warm ivory that varies slightly from harvest to harvest — was the finish, not a problem to correct. That instinct, treating the natural state as the destination rather than the starting point, is precisely what the Gold Label looks for.
Claims & Certifications
GOTS — Global Organic Textile Standard
GOTS is the certification doing the heavy lifting here, and it's worth understanding what it actually covers. Most “organic cotton” claims refer only to how the fiber was farmed. GOTS audits the entire chain: the cotton must be organically grown from non-GMO seed without synthetic pesticides, and then every facility that touches it — the spinner, the weaver, the finisher — is independently audited against processing rules that prohibit chlorine bleach, formaldehyde-based resins, toxic azo dyes, and PFAS. A GOTS certificate means the never-sprayed, no-toxic-chemistry claim was checked at every step, not just asserted at the end.
MADE SAFE
MADE SAFE approaches the product from the opposite direction: instead of auditing the process, it screens the chemistry of record — every input in the finished product — against a database of thousands of substances known or suspected to harm human health. It covers ground GOTS doesn't, which is why the two certifications together are stronger than either alone. MADE SAFE is a screening of inputs, not a lab test of the finished fabric, and we present it as exactly that.
Independent Research & Lab Testing
We cite independent consumer laboratories by name on this site whenever their work exists — and for this product, it doesn't. Neither Lead Safe Mama, LLC (tamararubin.com) nor Mamavation (mamavation.com) has published testing on Coyuchi's undyed percale, and no public certificate of analysis exists for the finished fabric.
What does exist: two independent certification systems auditing the farming, the processing chemistry, and the input list. That is genuinely strong — most bedding carries nothing of the kind — but it is not the same thing as a lab report on a batch of fabric, and we won't blur the two. If independent testing of this product is published in the future, this page will be updated to reflect it.
The Broader Picture
The bedding industry has a chemistry problem it rarely discusses. Conventional cotton is one of the most pesticide-intensive crops on earth, and most of it is genetically modified. After harvest, the chemistry continues: chlorine bleaching to strip the natural color, optical brighteners to make white look whiter, synthetic dyes, and — in any sheet marketed as “wrinkle-free” or “easy-care” — formaldehyde-based resins that off-gas for the life of the product. You spend a third of your life with this fabric against your skin.
The undyed approach solves most of that problem by refusing to participate in it. There is no dye chemistry to vet because there is no dye; no bleaching question because nothing was bleached. What remains — the farming and the mechanical processing — is what GOTS audits. That is why an undyed, certified sheet sits at the top of our sheets collection: it shrinks the list of things that can go wrong to nearly zero, and verifies the rest.
