Our Evaluation
Most sheets marketed as “natural” still pass through a gauntlet of chemistry on their way to the shelf: chlorine bleaching, optical brighteners, synthetic dyes, and resin finishes. Our standard for this category was simple and strict — organic, never-sprayed fiber, and no chemicals ever touching the fabric afterward. Very few sheets clear both halves of that bar. This one does.
Coyuchi's undyed percale begins with GOTS-certified organic cotton grown in West Texas. GOTS matters here because it audits the entire supply chain, not just the farm: the fiber must be organically grown and non-GMO, and every facility that processes it — spinning, weaving, finishing — is independently audited against rules that prohibit chlorine bleach, formaldehyde-based resins, toxic azo dyes, and PFAS. The never-sprayed claim isn't the brand's word; it's a certificate that has to be renewed under audit.
What sets this sheet apart even among GOTS-certified bedding is the undyed line itself. There is no dye step, no whitening step, and no brightening step at all — the warm natural shade you see is the color the cotton grew. Where most brands treat color as something to add, Coyuchi treats the absence of it as the finish. A second certification, MADE SAFE, independently screens the product's inputs against thousands of known and suspected toxins, covering ground GOTS doesn't.
We'll be plain about what doesn't exist: no independent laboratory has published a contaminant report on this specific product — no public certificate of analysis, and no testing from the consumer labs we cite elsewhere on this site. The purity case rests on two strong, independent process audits rather than finished-fabric lab data. We consider that the strongest verification available in this category today, and we say so rather than implying more.
GOTS — Global Organic Textile Standard
- Certifies the cotton was grown organically without synthetic pesticides and from non-GMO seed
- Audits every processing facility in the chain — not just the farm
- Prohibits chlorine bleach, formaldehyde resins, toxic azo dyes, and PFAS in processing
- Independent screening of product inputs against thousands of known and suspected harmful substances
- Covers chemistry of record — dyes, finishes, and processing aids — distinct from GOTS's farming scope
Transparency Note
No independent laboratory report exists for this specific product — no public certificate of analysis, and no published heavy-metals testing. GOTS and MADE SAFE are rigorous independent audits of process and inputs, but they are not lab results on a finished batch of fabric. We present them as exactly what they are. We are also confirming directly with Coyuchi that the undyed percale carries no softening finish (some of the brand's other weaves use a plant-based softener) and verifying the packaging materials.
How It Measures Up
Purity Profile
Naturalness & Purity 4/5
Undyed, unbleached, and unbrightened — the fabric is about as close to the cotton plant as a finished sheet can be. The fiber is certified organic and non-GMO under audit. It stops short of a perfect score only because no independent finished-fabric lab data exists to confirm what the process audits strongly imply.
Ingredients & Additives 5/5
Nothing is added. No dye chemistry, no bleaching agents, no optical brighteners, no resin finishes — categories that are hard disqualifiers under our standard are simply absent here, by the product's own design.
Verification 4/5
Two independent certifications — GOTS auditing the full supply chain and MADE SAFE screening the input chemistry — is a stronger verification stack than almost any sheet on the market carries. A public certificate of analysis on the finished fabric would complete the picture; none exists today.
Transparency 4/5
Coyuchi names its fiber origin (West Texas) and weaving location (Portugal) and publishes its certification scope openly. We'd like to see batch-level documentation made public — the gold standard set by the most transparent brands we cover — but the disclosure that exists is honest and specific.
Plain English, Always
Contaminant Status
Fiber Source — Pesticides & GMO
Organic, non-GMO cotton certified under GOTS — an independent farm-to-mill audit of growing practices. This is a practice audit, not a residue test, and we present it as such.
Bleaching & Whitening
None. The undyed line is never bleached and uses no optical brighteners — there is no whitening step in its production at all.
Dye Chemistry
None. This sheet is undyed — the color is the natural shade of the cotton fiber itself.
Chemical Finishes
GOTS prohibits formaldehyde-based resins and PFAS finishes throughout processing. We are confirming directly with Coyuchi that no softening finish is applied to this specific weave.
Heavy Metals
Not independently tested. No laboratory report exists for this product, and we won't imply one does.
Synthetics & Microplastics
100% cotton fiber — no polyester, no blends, no synthetic content that could shed microplastics in the wash.
Undyed Organic Percale Sheets
GOTS-certified organic cotton, grown in West Texas and never touched by dye, bleach, or brightener. The rare sheet that is both purest in form and independently verified.
