Our Evaluation
The pillow aisle is one of the most chemically loaded corners of the bedding world. Most pillows need flame retardants to pass safety expectations, and the fills that make them soft — polyester, memory foam — are petroleum products that off-gas for years. Our standard for this category was uncompromising: a natural fill, no flame-retardant chemistry, and no hidden processing steps. Wool clears the hardest part of that bar by its own nature.
Wool is naturally flame-resistant. Its high keratin and moisture content make it difficult to ignite, so a wool pillow meets fire-safety expectations without a single added chemical — it sidesteps the flame-retardant problem entirely rather than managing it. That structural advantage is the reason wool sits at the top of our pillow collection. But not all wool is clean, which is where Holy Lamb separates itself.
Most commercial wool is carbonized — dipped in an acid bath to burn away vegetable matter — and often bleached besides. Holy Lamb refuses both. Their wool is never carbonized, never bleached, and sheep dipping (the pesticide treatment many flocks receive) is never practiced. They offer a GOTS-certified organic wool from New Zealand and a pristine natural wool from a co-op of small western-US sheep farms. The whole pillow — wool batting inside a GOTS-certified organic cotton sateen shell that's never bleached or dyed — is hand-built in a small Washington town and is fully compostable at end of life.
We'll note the one thing to confirm: Holy Lamb sells two wool sources, and only the New Zealand option carries the GOTS certificate — the US co-op wool is declared clean by the maker rather than third-party certified. Both clear our standard, but they're different evidence, and our product page tells you which is which so you can choose with open eyes.

The maker's processing claims — never carbonized, never bleached, no sheep dipping — are the company's own declaration, credible in structure and consistent with its GOTS facility, but not a separate lab report. No independent laboratory report exists for this product.
