Two things have to be right that you can't see in the finished pillow: how the birds were treated, and how the down was cleaned. A down pillow earns the Gold Label by answering both, openly, not by being natural alone.
Avocado's down earns it. The welfare question is answered by the Responsible Down Standard — an audited chain of custody confirming humane treatment, no live-plucking, and that the down is a by-product of the food industry. The cleaning question is answered by an allergen wash that is EPA-registered and OEKO-TEX-listed, inside a GOTS organic cotton shell. We rank down below wool and the raw plant fills on our purity scale — not for any failing, but because it is the most-processed of the natural fills — and we say so plainly.
Who They Are
Avocado built its reputation on organic mattresses and brought that infrastructure to bedding: existing relationships with certified suppliers, real chain-of-custody auditing, and a habit of publishing its certifications in full. The company is a B Corp with a deep certification stack across its line, and it applies the same documentation discipline to a humble down pillow that it applies to its mattresses.
For down specifically, that discipline matters more than it would for a plant fill, because down's risks are upstream and invisible. Live-plucking and force-feeding happen at farms, far from the finished product, and the only way to rule them out is an audited chain of custody back to certified farms. RDS is the certification that makes down trustworthy. It's an audited chain of custody that traces the down back to certified farms and verifies humane treatment — specifically prohibiting live-plucking and force-feeding, the two practices the standard exists to eliminate. It also confirms the down is a by-product of the food industry rather than feathers from birds raised solely for plucking. For a natural material whose ethical risks are entirely upstream and invisible in the finished pillow, this audited traceability is the whole game.
GOTS Organic Cotton Shell + Registered Allergen Wash
The shell is GOTS-certified organic cotton — non-GMO, processed without chlorine bleach or formaldehyde. The down itself is cleaned with an allergen-reducing wash that is EPA-registered and appears on the OEKO-TEX list. We describe that wash precisely: it is a registered and listed treatment, which is meaningful and far better than unspecified conventional washing, but it is not a published certificate of analysis on the finished fill, and we won't present it as one.

What's verifiable is the RDS audited welfare chain, the GOTS-certified shell, and the EPA-registered, OEKO-TEX-listed allergen wash. That's a strong, multi-part evidence trail — but note what each piece is: a welfare audit, a fiber certification, and a registered treatment, respectively. The Broader Picture
The down industry's reputation problem is real and well-documented: live-plucking, where feathers are torn from living birds, and force-feeding tied to foie gras production. These practices happen out of sight, and a soft, lofty finished pillow reveals nothing about whether they occurred. That invisibility is exactly why an audited standard matters more for down than for almost any other natural fill.
