Why We Chose One Degree Organics Steel Cut Oats

Steel cut oats sit at an interesting intersection in the oat category: less processed than rolled oats, lower glycemic index, and a chewier texture that many families find more satisfying. But the contamination risks are identical — glyphosate is applied to oat crops at harvest regardless of how the grain is eventually cut, and heavy metals accumulate in the grain through soil and water regardless of processing format.

One Degree Organics is the only steel cut oat brand we found with BioChecked Non-Glyphosate Certification maintained through ongoing monthly batch testing. Their FAQ explicitly confirms that this certification covers all of their oat formats — rolled, steel cut, and quick oats — not just the rolled version. Combined with USDA Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, and full farm QR traceability, this is the strongest verification stack available for steel cut oats on Amazon.

A key part of our evaluation relied on independent testing data from Lead Safe Mama, LLC — an independent, community-funded consumer safety organization run by Tamara Rubin. Their heavy metals testing of One Degree's rolled oats represents the most thorough independent testing of any One Degree oat format. The steel cut version has not been independently tested for heavy metals. We disclose this gap in full below.

The rolled oats initially tested non-detect for all four metals (June 2024). A May 2025 retest found trace arsenic at ~9 ppb and trace cadmium at low levels
