Our Evaluation

Why We Chose Lundberg Family Farms

Rice is one of the most arsenic-contaminated staple foods in the American diet. Almost every sample of rice tested by independent researchers contains detectable arsenic — it is unavoidable because rice absorbs arsenic from soil and water more readily than most other crops. Given that reality, the question isn't whether a rice contains arsenic, but how much, how transparent the brand is about it, and whether the growing location minimizes the risk.

Lundberg Family Farms earns its Bonham Gold Label for three reasons: California sourcing, a decade-long commitment to published third-party heavy metals testing, and a Regenerative Organic Certification that explicitly prohibits glyphosate. Their long grain white rice tested at approximately 65 ppb total arsenic in Mamavation's independent testing — among the lowest results for any long grain white rice tested. Lead was non-detectable.

We are transparent that arsenic is detectable in this product. It is lower than virtually every competitor, and Lundberg is one of the only rice brands that has published its own testing data since 2013. That honesty is exactly what a Bonham Gold Label product looks like.

Per Lundberg Family Farms

  • Regenerative Organic Certified® — the highest regenerative certification, requiring USDA Organic as a baseline and adding soil health, animal welfare, and farmer fairness criteria
  • Explicitly prohibits glyphosate and all toxic chemicals under the Regenerative Organic Certified standard
  • Third-party heavy metals testing conducted at AGQ Labs (accredited) since 2013 — results published publicly on their website
  • 11-year average inorganic arsenic: 0.09 ppm — well below FDA, EFSA, and CODEX maximum levels
  • Cadmium average: less than 13 ppb — well below EU and CODEX maximums
  • No chemical fumigants — food-grade CO2 used to keep stored rice fresh
  • California grown — California soils consistently produce rice with lower arsenic than southern US growing regions

Per Independent Testing

  • Mamavation sent 57 rice products to an EPA-certified independent laboratory to test for arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury. Lundberg Family Farms Long Grain White Rice tested at approximately 65 ppb total arsenic and non-detectable lead — placing it among the best performers in the entire study
  • Mamavation's guide specifically lists Lundberg Long Grain White Rice in their recommended "best" category for long grain rice based on arsenic levels below 0.1 ug/g total arsenic
  • An independent analysis of California-grown Lundberg rice varieties found virtually zero detectable lead, cadmium, and mercury — consistent with Lundberg's own published results

Purity Profile

Heavy Metals 3/5
Arsenic is detectable at approximately 65 ppb — among the lowest of any long grain white rice tested independently, and well below FDA and EU limits. Lead is non-detectable. Cadmium averages less than 13 ppb. Lundberg has published third-party testing since 2013. Scored 3 rather than higher because arsenic is still present — we are honest that no rice is arsenic-free.
Pesticides 4/5
Regenerative Organic Certified explicitly prohibits glyphosate and all synthetic pesticides. USDA Organic certified. No pesticide residue testing is published, but the certification standard is strong. Scored 4 rather than 5 because no independent pesticide lab results are publicly available.
Chemicals & Toxins 5/5
No synthetic pesticides, no toxic additives, no chemical fumigants. Lundberg uses food-grade CO2 instead of chemical fumigants to keep stored rice fresh — a meaningful distinction from conventional rice brands. Regenerative Organic Certified prohibits a wide range of toxic inputs.
GMO 5/5
Non-GMO Project Verified. Regenerative Organic Certified also requires non-GMO as a baseline requirement. Rice is not currently a GMO crop in commercial production, but Lundberg's certifications confirm this explicitly.
Verified 4/5
Verified through published third-party heavy metals testing since 2013, Regenerative Organic Certification, Non-GMO Project Verification, and independent Mamavation testing. Scored 4 rather than 5 because batch-level Certificates of Analysis are not publicly available for every harvest.
Purity 4/5
California grown on family farms under Regenerative Organic standards since 1937. White rice is milled which removes the bran layer — a processing step that also reduces arsenic content compared to brown rice. Clean sourcing, minimal additives, and strong farming practices. Scored 4 because milling is a processing step and arsenic is detectable.
Mold 1/5
No mold testing publicly disclosed. Dry rice can harbor mold under improper storage. Lundberg uses CO2 rather than chemical fumigants for storage — a positive practice — but mold testing is not published. Store in a cool, dry, airtight container.
Microplastics N/A
Not applicable — microplastic contamination is not a known concern for dry rice in paper packaging under normal conditions. This pillar is not evaluated for this product type.
Yeast N/A
Not applicable — yeast contamination is not a relevant concern for dry rice under normal storage conditions. This pillar is not evaluated for this product type.

Contaminant Status

What We Know About This Product

A transparent breakdown of every contaminant category and what is known — or not known — about this specific product.

Heavy Metals
Arsenic detectable at ~65 ppb total arsenic — among the lowest for any long grain white rice tested independently. Lead non-detectable. Cadmium average under 13 ppb. Third-party testing published since 2013. Arsenic is present but at far lower levels than most competitors.
Pesticides
Regenerative Organic Certified explicitly prohibits glyphosate and all synthetic pesticides. USDA Organic certified. No independent pesticide residue testing published, but certification standard is strong and comprehensive.
Chemicals & Toxins
No synthetic pesticides, no toxic additives, no chemical fumigants. Food-grade CO2 used for storage instead of chemical fumigants. One of the cleanest storage practices in the rice industry.
GMO
Non-GMO Project Verified. Regenerative Organic Certified also requires non-GMO compliance. Not a concern for this product.
Mold
No mold testing publicly disclosed. Dry rice can harbor mold under improper storage conditions. Store in a cool, dry, airtight container and use within a reasonable timeframe.
