The Bonham Standard

Our Evaluation

Most towels marketed as “natural” still run a gauntlet of chemistry before they reach the shelf: chlorine bleaching, optical brighteners, synthetic dyes, and softening resins. Our standard for this category was simple and strict — organic, never-sprayed fiber, and nothing added to the cloth afterward. Very few towels clear both halves of that bar. This one does.

Coyuchi's plush long-loop towel begins with long-staple organic cotton grown and woven in the Aegean region of Turkey, and it carries GOTS certification. GOTS matters here because it audits the entire supply chain, not just the field: the fiber must be organically grown and non-GMO, and every facility that spins, weaves, and finishes it is independently audited against rules that prohibit chlorine bleach, formaldehyde-based resins, toxic azo dyes, and PFAS. The never-sprayed claim isn't the brand's word; it's a certificate that has to be renewed under audit.

What sets this towel apart even among GOTS-certified bath linens is the undyed cloth itself. There is no dye step, no whitening step, and no brightening step at all — the warm natural shade you see is the color the cotton grew. The long single loops are loomed to sit lofty and plush, drinking up water while staying soft wash after wash, and finished with smooth sateen-woven edges. Where most brands treat color as something to add, Coyuchi treats the absence of it as the finish.

Coyuchi is a Fair Trade Certified maker, layering audited fair-labor traceability on top of GOTS, and it is a MADE SAFE-certified brand besides. We'll be plain about what doesn't exist: no independent laboratory has published a contaminant report on this specific towel — no public certificate of analysis, and no testing from the consumer labs we cite elsewhere on this site. The purity case rests on strong, independent process and labor audits rather than finished-cloth lab data. We consider that the strongest verification available in this category today, and we say so rather than implying more.

GOTS — Global Organic Textile Standard

  • Certifies the cotton was grown organically without synthetic pesticides and from non-GMO seed
  • Audits every processing facility in the chain — spinning, weaving, finishing — not just the farm
  • Prohibits chlorine bleach, formaldehyde resins, toxic azo dyes, and PFAS in processing

Fair Trade Certified

  • Independently certifies fair wages and safe working conditions across the supply chain
  • Provides traceability from the farm to the finished good
  • Coyuchi pays a Fair Trade premium into a worker-managed community fund

Transparency Note

No independent laboratory report exists for this specific product — no public certificate of analysis, and no published heavy-metals testing. GOTS and Fair Trade are rigorous independent audits of process and labor, but they are not lab results on a finished batch of cloth. We present them as exactly what they are. Coyuchi is also a MADE SAFE-certified brand; we are confirming that the seal applies to this specific undyed weave, that no softening finish is used on it (some of the brand's other weaves use a plant-based softener), and verifying the packaging materials.

How It Measures Up

Purity Profile

Naturalness & Purity 4/5

Undyed, unbleached, and unbrightened — the cloth is about as close to the cotton plant as a finished towel can be, woven from long-staple organic, non-GMO fiber under audit. It stops short of a perfect score only because no independent finished-cloth lab data exists to confirm what the process audits strongly imply.

Ingredients & Additives 5/5

Nothing is added. No dye chemistry, no bleaching agents, no optical brighteners, no resin finishes — categories that are hard disqualifiers under our standard are simply absent here, by the towel's own design.

Verification 4/5

GOTS audits the full supply chain and Fair Trade certifies fair labor and traceability — two independent, audited certifications, and Coyuchi is a MADE SAFE brand besides. That is a stronger verification stack than almost any towel on the market carries. A public certificate of analysis on the finished cloth would complete the picture; none exists today.

Transparency 4/5

Coyuchi names its fiber origin (the Aegean region of Turkey) and publishes its certification scope openly, and runs a circular take-back program for worn textiles. We'd like to see batch-level lab documentation made public — the gold standard set by the most transparent brands we cover — but the disclosure that exists is honest and specific.

Plain English, Always

Contaminant Status

Fiber Source — Pesticides & GMO

Organic, non-GMO cotton certified under GOTS — an independent farm-to-mill audit of growing practices. This is a practice audit, not a residue test, and we present it as such.

Bleaching & Whitening

None. The undyed line is never bleached and uses no optical brighteners — there is no whitening step in its production at all.

Dye Chemistry

None. This towel is undyed — the color is the natural shade of the cotton fiber itself.

Chemical Finishes

GOTS prohibits formaldehyde-based resins and PFAS finishes throughout processing. We are confirming directly with Coyuchi that no softening finish is applied to this specific weave.

Heavy Metals

Not independently tested. No laboratory report exists for this product, and we won't imply one does.

Synthetics & Microplastics

100% cotton fiber — no polyester, no blends, no synthetic content that could shed microplastics in the wash.

Undyed Plush Organic Cotton Towels
