Our Evaluation
A dyed towel has to clear a bar an undyed one never faces: the color itself. Most “naturally colored” towels are still finished with synthetic dyes — and even many organic brands rely on what's merely the least-bad option, low-impact synthetic dye that's GOTS-approved but still petrochemical in origin. We wanted the dyed pick that doesn't compromise on the color step at all. This is it.
Aizome begins where every towel on our list begins: GOTS-certified organic cotton, grown without synthetic pesticides from non-GMO seed and processed under an audited chain that bans chlorine bleach, formaldehyde resins, and PFAS. The base cloth is unbleached. From there, what makes Aizome unusual is the dyeing itself — the cotton is colored only with medicinal plants such as indigo, madder root, and nutgall, with no synthetic dyes, fixatives, or auxiliaries anywhere in the process.
The method is the other half of the story. Rather than the heavy water-and-chemical baths conventional dyeing requires, Aizome uses a patented ultrasound process that presses plant pigment into the fiber, cutting dye-water dramatically and eliminating synthetic dye chemistry entirely. The company has partnered with the University of Cambridge on the underlying research and publishes its own laboratory testing — a far more open posture on the color step than the rest of the category offers. Aizome also states its plant-dyed fabric carries naturally antibacterial properties from the dye plants themselves; we pass that along as the maker's tested claim, not as a health benefit Bonham is endorsing.
